Smartcards receive the electrical power they need to operate from a low
frequency, magnetic field emitted from a smartcard reader. This magnetic
field induces a current in a loop of wire concealed inside of your card,
which powers the embedded microchip. By placing your contactless smartcard
inside of the SMARTSHIELD,
it prevents the wireless exchange of data between your card and a reader
in 2 ways:
First, it blocks the magnetic field emitted by a reader from reaching the card and thus prevents the embedded microchip from receiving the power it needs to operate. This is the most effective way to shield your card and also the most difficult to achieve. Second, the relatively high electrical conductivity of the SMARTSHIELD closely approximates a Farad Cage and blocks any RF communication that might occur if somehow the chip were to receive the power it requires to operate. Tests have show that the SMARTSHIELD can prevent communication between a smartcard and some readers when inserted only 1/3 of the way inside of the shield. However, a smartcard should always be fully inserted into the SMARTSHIELD since some readers are designed to emit much higher strength magnetic fields to achieve longer ranges (~l000 feet). |
