What is the SMARTSHIELD made of that makes it work?
The SMARTSHIELD is made of a sophisticated, high nickel content metal alloy with an extremely high magnetic permeability which enables it to shield your smartcard from low frequency magnetic fields.  This material is used in fighter aircraft to shield their avionics from the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) emitted by nuclear weapons.  This material must be hyperannealed in a hydrogen atmosphere at over 1100°C to fully develop these special properties.  The material and the required processing make this shield both difficult and expensive to manufacture.

The thickness of the shield material was selected to provide the necessary structural rigidity which just so happens to be much greater than the thickness required to shield against the magnetic fields emitted by smartcard readers.  This makes the SMARTSHIELD completely overdesigned for its intended purpose.  There are cheaper materials that can approximate the performance of  this material, but none that can match it.  When faced with the choice of using some of these lesser materials, Cord Technologies elected to manufacture the highest quality smartcard shield possible.  Given that these cards may hold sensitive personal, financial, health and welfare information and possibly information pertaining to matters of national security, we felt that nothing but the best would suffice.
