Often times, drivers are confused as to the process to follow if they are involved in an accident. AFC hopes to offer this explanation as a starting point for how to deal with such a situation. First and foremost, after an automobile accident, if at all possible, pull your vehicle out of traffic and out of the way of danger. Saftey should be of the utmost concern. If there are injuries or serious vehicular damage or any of the involved vehicles are not mobile, be sure to call the police and an ambulance if necessary. Next, be sure to determine all parties involved. Be sure to take down the names, addresses, telephone numbers, license plate numbers, and vehicle make, model and color of all persons and vehicles involved in the accident. In addition, get the names and addresses of any witnesses to the accident. If the police arrive at the scene, be sure to let an officer take your statement as to the events surrounding the accident. A police report can be convinving evidence later in the process, if necessary. After leaving the scene, jot down your recollection as to the facts surrounding the incident. In addition, be sure to notify your insurance company of the accident. Within a few days, adjusters and claims representatives may contact you. When you speak with these people, be sure to take down their names and telephone numbers. Take notes of your conversations. Do not answer any question you feel uncomfortable with or one which you feel "trapped into". In most cases, adjusters and attorneys will be pleasant to deal with, but there are exceptions. In the event that you feel that the claim is not being
handled to your satisfaction, remember that you always have
the option of contacting the Department of Insurance to
request an investigation or inquiry into the issue. |
