The family left Ohio and moved to Kansas after the death of four of their sons from diphtheria. Two sons were buried in the same Coffin in 1864 and the other two died a few days apart in 1878. Esther Jane Barb Bingaman believed the North winds off the lake in the winters was killing her children. She believed the climate of eastern Kansas would be better for the children's health. They moved to Princeton, Kansas in 1882. They lost no more children after the move to Kansas. There they farmed. The National Road went near the farm. It was a corduroy road made of logs, which made hard it was for the horses to pull the wagons up the hill. William walked with a limp either from his varicose veins or might have had polio. Because of this he could not help with the wheat harvest because of his varicose veins. He had the sores and the wheat chaff would get in the sores. William died June/05/1910 in Princeton, Ks. He had very broad shoulders and his body would not fit in a standard coffin. One had to be made special for him.
