Fall Leaf Pick-up
Again this fall, we will be picking up leaves at
curbside in neatly raked rows. The bulk curbside leaf collection program
provides residents an easy way to dispose of leaves. Using specialized
mechanical equipment, city crews collect leaves from your tree lawn. .
Weather uncertainties make it impossible for the city to guarantee curbside leaf
collection on a specific day. This popular program
begins in mid October and is completed by early December. To participate,
residents simply rake leaves to the street, next to the curb or edge of the
road.
Each
fall, the City assists residents in picking up leaves. We will typically collect
and dispose of over 6,000 compacted cubic yards of leaves each fall. With the
cooperation of property owners the City can provide a good and efficient
service.
Crews begin on the north end of the City and work to
the south making as many rounds as possible. Signs will be posted about one to
three days in advance when possible to alert residents when workers will be in
their neighborhood. Depending on the weather, it will take crews approximately
two weeks to complete each collection. Avoid placing items other than leaves in
leaf piles. Items, such as branches, twigs, lumber, rocks, etc., cause the
equipment to breakdown. This delays the collection process and increases
the cost of the program.
In 2009, leaf pickup is planned to begin Monday, October 19th.
The last scheduled day for leaf collection will be Friday, December 4,
2009.
After this date, equipment will be converted for snow removal operations.

We ask all property owners to observe the following guidelines
to ensure that this service may continue to operate quickly, safely and
efficiently.
Guidelines:
- Brecksville residents are strongly urged to refrain from parking on City
streets that are scheduled for leaf collection since it is impossible to
collect piled leaves that are near or under parked cars.
-
All leaves must be located in a row within three (3)
feet of the street pavement edge. Do not rake leaves to the middle of the street or into huge
piles. Instead rake them the whole length of the curb line. This allows for more
efficient collection by leaf equipment. Leaves must NOT be placed in ditches, over loose/decorative stone or in the
Roadway.
-
Care should be taken to
ensure that storm drains are kept free of leaves. Also, please keep leaves away
from mailboxes and fire hydrants.
-
Try not to place leaves at the street edge
until 3-4 days before scheduled pickup. "Fresh" leaves placed in a row
parallel to the street are much easier for the Service Department to collect.
-
If leaves are not raked to the curb when the equipment moves
through a street, the truck will not back-track, however, crews will make
periodic return trips through neighborhoods.
no tree
branches, bricks, lawn clippings, or other debris may be mixed with leaves.
These foreign materials can cause damage to equipment and cause injury to the
leaf collection personnel. Contaminated
piles will not be collected or removed.
Do Not place leaves behind obstacles such as:
Parked vehicles, trees, mailboxes, fire hydrants, etc.
Property owners are responsible for leaf
disposal after the seven-week curbside campaign is completed by the Service
Department. Snow, rain, or freezing weather may significantly delay or
permanently halt curbside leaf collection.
