Yard Waste Collection
Set out at the curb by 7:30 a.m. rain, or shine! Routes can change at
any time and so can your pickup time.
Trees - Large trees taken down do not constitute yard waste
whereas ongoing yard maintenance of lawns, shrubs, bushes and tree
prunings is yard waste. Large trees having a trunk diameter exceeding
6" will not be taken.
When engaging the services of a tree removal service or landscaper, the
company should dispose of the trees or the homeowner is responsible. Trees
or limbs 3" in diameter or less must be cut in lengths of 6' maximum
and bundled without roots. Tie bundles securely at each end with twine
only. Limbs or tree parts 4" to 6" diameter may be placed out
singularly and not bundled, but stacked neatly.
Yard waste - Yard waste is grass cuttings, bushes, shrub
and tree branch prunings, left over leaves or weeds from the previous
fall, or an occasional small tree that is cut up and tied in 6' bundles
not to exceed 50 pounds each. Grass cuttings, leaves, weeds and twigs must
be placed in biodegradable yard waste, 30-gal paper bags only. No other
material or container will be accepted. Grass/leaf bags will be collected
for recycling on your regular rubbish day.
Grass Clippings - Don't Bag Them! Grass clippings
make great mulch for your garden or lawn. Not bagging your grass clippings
will benefit your lawn and is an excellent way to reduce the waste stream.
Leaving clippings on the lawn works best when the grass is cut into small
pieces. Grass should be cut
when it is 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches long and the clippings should be less
than 1 inch long for faster decomposition.
Grass clippings do not cause thatch, which is dead and dying plant parts
that accumulate above the soil surface of the lawn. By regularly leaving
grass clippings on the lawn, you actually help reduce thatch problems.
Before you stop bagging your grass clippings, remove any thatch from your
lawn so grass clippings can filter down to the soil.
Leaving your clippings on the lawn makes mowing easier and returns
nutrients and organic matter to the soil. The lawn will need less water
and fertilizer.

Recycle and Yard Waste Collection Schedule

Slow Down To Get Around Safety Campaign
Each year,
80,000 pedestrians are injured in motor vehicle crashes. 4700-6000 will
die in a motor vehicle crashes. The majority of pedestrian crashes occur at
locations other than intersections. Where vehicle speeds are higher and drivers
don’t expect to stop. Pedestrians appear and the driver does not have time to
react. Traditional approaches have emphasized the need to modify pedestrian
behavior but recent studies reveal that nearly 40% of the collisions involve
driver negligence. Please slow down and use caution when ever passing public
service vehicles on the road.
- Guidelines for Residential Curbside Collection
General
Please put your recyclable items in a separate location away from your
refuse. We recommend you put your recyclable items on one side of your
driveway at the curb and put your refuse on the other side. Two distinct
locations for these items will avoid missed collections and ensure efficient
service.
Place your recyclables and refuse at the curb line or edge of shoulder.
Items not at curb side or at the edge of the roadway will not be collected.
Place your refuse and recyclables curbside by 7:30 a.m. on collection day -
some days we have extra crews or reverse the routes so please have your
material out early.
Rubbish Rules
All refuse should be at the curb by 7:30a.m. but not prior
to 6 p.m. the day before collection. The hour of collection may vary. If your
regular rubbish pick-up falls on a holiday, it will be picked up on the
following work day along with your recycling.

You can help prevent injury, illness, and pollution by following some simple
steps when you dispose of sharp objects and contaminated materials you use in
administering health care in your home. You should place NEEDLES, SYRINGES,
LANCETS, AND OTHER SHARP OBJECTS in a hard plastic (such as a laundry detergent
jug) or metal container with a screw-on cap or tightly secured lid.
Before discarding a container, be sure to reinforce the lid with heavy-duty
tape. Do not put sharp objects in any container you plan to recycle, and do not
use glass or clear plastic containers.
Containers with sharps are not recyclable You may want to label the
container, "NOT FOR RECYCLING." These steps go a long way toward
protecting workers and others from possible injury.

Home Depot kicks off nationwide CFL recycling program
June 24, 2008 -- Recycling compact fluorescent light bulbs just got easier.
Home Depot announced it will offer free CFL recycling at each of its
1,973 locations. Customers can drop off expired, unbroken bulbs at the
returns counter of any Home Depot store.
The home improvement retailer is beginning the program in response to
customers´ concerns about improper disposal of the bulbs, which contain small
amounts of mercury.
The national recycling program is the most widespread of its kind and offers
an alternative to some existing options -- community hazardous waste programs
and select retail stores, according to the retailer.
"With more than 75 percent of households located within 10 miles of a
Home Depot store, this program is the first national solution to providing
Americans with a convenient way to recycle CFLs," said Ron Jarvis, Home
Depot´s senior vice president for environmental innovation.
For more information about Home Depot's CFL recycling program, go to http://www.cuyahogaswd.org/residents/bulbs.htm
