Engaged Couples

Engaged couples are often the easiest people to photograph on the face of the earth. Expressive, cooperative, all smiles, romantic, tender and willing to share all this in front of a camera. A photographer's dream!

Despite all this, a visual artist still needs to know basic posing techniques, how to work with the couple, locations and well as times where and when to shoot the couple. Others factors can come into play like bad weather (outdoor shots), poor lighting (cloudy days or poor interior lighting) and the mood of the client at the time of the shoot.

Here's an example of a shot of a recently engaged couple I took. The visual reaction of most viewers is to notice the tenderness, joy and love expressed by this couple. Attempting to pull forth the feelings and reality of the relationship and present it onto a two-dimensional page is a chief aim of a engagement photographer. Other minor details can add to the finished product. In this shot, note the engagement ring on the woman's hand reflecting the light. It is also presented unobstructed and delicately highlighted by the woman's pose, an overall effect that subtley contributes to a more powerful picture.

This shot also highlights image additions and transformations that can be accomplished before printing in the Sunshine Photography studio. Obviously, the name of the couple was added to the photo in the upper corner. Other words could have been added instead, words that might express this moment, such as joy or love. Or perhaps the date of their wedding could be placed on the shot.

Partial image transformation can highlight certain aspects and create an overall better picture. It was completely overcast during the afternoon of this shoot and the sky presented an ugly gray background to the couple; a shade that took away from the happy mood of this moment. It became a simple matter to later transform the background to this more sprightly blue color that matched the mood. The final effect is a much better overall image.
