Founded in May of 1996 by Lewis and Annie Kostiner, owners of Annie Properties, Annie Chicago, and Johnny's Ice House, the PEACH Club was established to improve the lives of disadvantaged children in Chicago. They believe that in order for all of us to learn and grow we must feel safe and have the time to approach the world without inhibition. They wanted to create a place for children that nurtures these qualities and gives them healthy and creative ways to approach and define the world around them. The PEACH Club was created to be that safe place. Children deserve our Patience, while they are discovering new things. They thrive on Encouragement when they are unsure of the path ahead of them. Art and creativity offer non-threatening ways for problem solving and introspection. Consistency allows them the freedom from confusion to focus on their tasks and Hope keeps them looking forward to the wonderful things ahead.
The PEACH Club works with children aged eight to fourteen, drawn from Chicago's more disadvantaged neighborhoods. We work with community-based organizations such as Horizons for Youth, Erie House, Family Focus, Cathedral Shelter, and Christopher House to identify those children whom would benefit most from our program. We also have relationships with the Chicago Public Schools and The Archdiocese of Chicago to establish the PEACH Club at some of their schools. Our student population is 40% Latino, 30% African American, 15% Asian, and 15% multi-racial. Since early childhood most have experienced unsettled family units which include divorce, single-parent moms, absentee fathers, and multiple families living in one dwelling. Many have been exposed to violence or gang recruitment, racism, and drug abuse by family members and friends.
