Nomenclature and Setup 1. You may complain that some of the connections listed are outdated, unnecessary, or tenuous at best: so what! I'm only trying to prove a point here, not do a genealogy thesis. 2. In the trees, women are listed with their maiden name only (if I know it); it's easier to read that way. 3. I haven't listed everyone's romantic connections, only those that (a) I know, and (b) interact with (or fit into) the tree. For example, I'm not up-to-date on the Human Torch's love life, and there's no mention of Wolverine. 4. No, I wouldn't consider Katherine Summers and Emperor D'Ken to be "romantically linked" either. However, I couldn't find any other term to describe all of the non-marriage connections (including theirs) that was nearly as tasteful. 5. As you may have noticed, the Fantastic Four/Inhumans section in Part 2 of the tree is not as detailed or complete as the rest of Part 2 or Part 1. Sorry, but it's very difficult to fit everyone in with only 80 columns to work with. However, the wide version of the Tree (not currently available) does go into a bit more detail. 6. I don't usually include rumors and theories in the trees, unless they are nearly proven. However, if the rumors/theories are well-known and often debated, they might be included in this "notes" section. 7. I know the validity of Magneto's real name is in question right now. I don't care, it's staying as is until resolution one way or the other. B. Particularly tricky characters (clones, time-travelers, liars, etc.) The retcon: staple of Marvel's X-continuity. Because of retcons, a new character may turn out to be the clone of a time-traveler from an alternate future, who's been lied to his whole life, and had his memory erased. Let's name names, shall we? 1. In 1860, Oscar Stamp and his adopted son Daniel immigrated to America. They decided to commemorate their new lives with a new surname, and chose "Summers", after the nice time-travelers they had recently met. 2. In the main Marvel universe, Scott's first wife was Madelyne Pryor, and his second is Jean Grey. Madelyne is the clone of Jean by Mr. Sinister, who called himself her father (although they are not actually related). Scott married Maddie, and they had a son, Nathan Christopher Charles, named for all of his "grandfathers" (Sinister, Corsair, and Professor X). Nathan was taken into a possible alternate future and cloned by the Clan Askani. This clone, called Stryfe, was fostered by Apocalypse in that future. Baby Nathan was raised by a time-displaced Scott and Jean (calling themselves Slym and Redd) and grew up to be Cable. Cable, Stryfe, and Cable's son Tyler have all time-traveled to the present universe. 3. Speaking of Tyler, because Cable had a tendency to refer to him as "Jenskot's son" instead of "my son", and various other "evidence", there is a rumor that he's not actually Cable's son. Some even theorize that his real father is Stryfe. However, until this theory is confirmed in a canonical comic, I'm going with his stated parentage. 4. In one alternate future universe (often called Days of Futures Past), Madelyne never existed and Scott married Jean first. They had a daughter, Rachel. Rachel later came to our present universe, then went to Cable's alternate future (about 100 years before Cable arrived) and formed the Clan Askani. 5. In DOFP, Rachel was romantically linked to the Franklin Richards of that future. In a possible version of that future universe, they had a son, Jonathan Reed, who has time-traveled to the present to become the villain known as Hyperstorm. 6. In yet another alternate universe (called Age of Apocalypse), Scott didn't marry anybody. However, Mr. Sinister mixed the genetic material of Scott and Jean to make a clone he called Nathan (of course). This clone later came to our present universe and calls himself Nate Grey. 7. In yet *another* alternate universe (referred to as "the Mutant X Universe") Scott is presumed dead, *Alex* is married to Madelyne, and they have a son, Scotty. 8. Adam-X is probably the "third Summers brother", but his exact parentage is somewhat uncertain. His history as stated in Captain Marvel #3 said that he was the son of the late Shi'ar Emperor D'Ken, whose genes were mixed with some unstated non-Shi'ar woman. However, as X-Treme is blond, and Katherine Summers was the only blond human woman in Shi'ar space at the appropriate time, I'm going with the theory that she's his mother. 9. Jean Grey's sister Sara had twin children, Joey and Gailyn. While under Nanny's control as part of her "Lost Boys and Girls", the twins were collectively known as Shatterbox. 10. Zaladane claimed to be Lorna Dane's sister (as Lorna was adopted, she didn't know for sure). 11. Magneto's first wife was Magda. They had a daughter, Anya, and then the twins Pietro and Wanda (who Magnus didn't know about for many years). In this universe, Magneto and Rogue have had a relationship of sorts. However, in AoA, Magneto's second wife was Rogue, and they had a son, Charles. 12. Mystique claimed to be Nightcrawler's mother through her marriage to a German count, but she may have been lying. In AoA, she told Kurt that she chose his father for his fur. What that means in relation to his parentage in the real Marvel universe, I'm really not sure. C. Who's alive, who's dead (at the moment) In my original paper family tree, I used to have a code meaning "deceased", but with the Revolving Door Policy in X-Men Heaven, it got a bit ridiculous. So, to sum up the current situation: 1. Oscar and Daniel summers are dead of old age, presumably. 2. Katherine Ann Summers is dead, killed by D'ken. 3. I'm not sure whether D'Ken is dead -- at the very least, he is catatonic. 4. Both Adam and Rebecca Essex have been dead for over a hundred years. It's a long sad story, and I'm not going into it here. 5. Sara Grey is dead, killed/absorbed by the Phalanx. I have no idea what happened to her husband. 6. Madelyne Pryor was dead, but isn't now, because she was revived as a psionic construct by Nate Grey, and has since absorbed life-force, so I assume she counts as "alive." 7. Zaladane is dead, killed by Magneto. 8. Rachel Summers died of old age and/or exhaustion in the future, but her aged spirit has been seen floating around in the present. However, in the real world, she hasn't even been born yet . 9. At one point in a possible future , Aliya will be killed by Stryfe's henchmen. 10. Stryfe's body is dead, and his soul is in hell, but his dormant mind may still live on within in Cable's. 11. Tyler Dayspring is dead, killed by Wolverine. 12. Mystique's German count is probably dead, unless she was lying, in which case he might have never existed (I mean, he's from Unlimited #4 -- that is not, IMHO, a good source). 13. Stephan Szardos is dead -- he committed suicide by breaking his neck using Nightcrawler's tail. It's a long story, and it has to do with the Szardos family magic. 14. Anya died in a house fire which her father was kept from stopping. 15. Magda died from exposure and exhaustion after giving birth to Wanda and Pietro. 16. Charles Lensherr (of AoA) probably died (or never really existed) once the bombs and/or crystal wave struck. But you never know, he might turn up again one day; this is Marvel, after all. D. History of the Tree - Changes since the last version: Summers ancestors added, Scotty Summers added, finally got a last name for Sara Grey's husband and kids, and the usual revision of notes. Also, there's now a code for "unspecified descent." - Planned changes: The wide version is on hold right now, as it can only be viewed with an infinitely wide screen (i.e., a web browser), and my homepage doesn't exist at the moment. However, when it is finished, it will be in HTML (with Instant-Expand-A-Tree, colors to indicate alternate universes, and links to footnotes and citations), and may include the Braddocks, the Shaws, the Trasks, and if I feel particularly masochistic, the Phalanx/Technarchy. Other changes will depend on the vagaries of Marvel continuity. The Complete Summers Family Tree is compiled by Brucha S. Meyers.
