This script shows the time left until a future date, in this case the year 2000.  When the year reaches 2000, the script starts a new countdown to the year 2001, which is the beginning of both the 21st Century and the 3rd millennium.  After the year reaches 2001, a countdown to the following year starts and will be repeated each year until the first day of the 22nd Century.

A century is a period of 100 years.  A millennium is a period of 1000 years.  The year 2000 is the last year of the 20th Century and of the second millennium.  The start of the 21st Century and the end of the 20th will be reached on January 1, 2001.  The start of the third millennium and the end of the second will also be reached on the same date, January 1, 2001.  This date is based on the almost universally recognized Gregorian calendar.  Years in this calendar begin with the year one AD (January 1, 1 Anno Domini), not with the year zero.

The script has been updated to show the countdown directly on the page for supporting browsers or in TEXT FORM elements for the others.  A style sheet has been added for newer browsers.   Changes have been made to accommodate both older and newer browsers, including WebTV , Opera , HotJava, and all JavaScript capable versions of Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer.

Another version of the script, but without CSSP, is available here.
