The Kesling Family Line

Revised 05-Dec-1998

The research into our Kiessling origins has been the faithful work of Earl Kisling and Wolf Sakowski. They have reached back into the Catholic period of the old German states. We can now trace our documented Kiessling line back to 1515, just before the Protestant Reformation occurred in Europe. All the records of our Kiessling people we speak of are found in Evangelical Lutheran records. That means they became or were Lutheran very early in the Reformation. Wolf Sakowski and Clem Schreiber, a researcher in the German state of Hesse have done the basic research work for us on our Kiessling line.

Their work disputes early Kesling research that may have been based on rumors or legends but offer little proof. Some sources speak of a Viking relationship to Kisslings in Switzerland. We find no connection between our Kiesslings and the Kisslings of Switzerland, or of Wurttemberg.

The three common variants in the U. S. of our surname Kiessling that we know of are Kissling, Kisling, and Kesling. There is other less common variations, of course. Our immigrant ancestor, Christoph Kiessling had the surname Kiessling when he arrived in Philadelphia in 1752. He wrote his name as Kissling in the courthouse record when he signed in. In German script writing, as in the name Kiessling, the double s was represented by the eszett, the letter in German that seems to resemble our capital B. If other spellings of the surname were given sometimes, they were errors committed on the part of copiers or recorders of information and were not used or written by our own Kiessling/Kissling people.

Our earliest ancestor, Christoph Kiessling, is found in the church records of Wiessdorf, now found in Regenburg, Bavaria archives. The Weissendorf church records start in 1572, which is very early for German church records. On Dec 3, 1577 Christoph Kiessling married Sibilla (maiden name unknown) in Weissdorf.

Sixth Generation

19. Christoph Sebastian6 Kiessling (Abraham Andreas5, Johann Heinrich4, Peter3, Jobst2, Christoph1) was born in Posseck, Saxony 24 Sep 1713. Posseck is a small town near thr Czech-Germany border. Christoph died 1773-1774 in Lick Run, Augusta Co, VA, at 59 years of age. His body was interred 1774 in Peaked Mt. Church Cem.

He married twice. He married Anna Gertrauda Kautz in Steinau, Hesse-Hanau (Germany), 05 Jun 1749. Anna was born 02 Sep 1722 in Steinau, Hesse-Hanau (Germany). Anna was the daughter of Christian Kautz and Anna Catherina Broll. Anna died 1758 at 35 years of age. He married Anna Christina Lingel in probably Ursulasburg, Augusta Co, VA, abt 1757. Anna was born Oct 1737 ?. Anna was the daughter of Johann Jacob Lingle and Anna Ursula Banckhard. She married John Herdman. Anna died aft Jan 1792 in Rockingham, VA. Her body was interred aft Jan 1792 in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Elkton, Rockingham Co, VA.

He resided in near McGahaysville, now Rockingham Co, VA. He was baptized in Lutheran church, Posseck, Saxony, 25 Sep 1713. Christoph was baptized the day after his birth. His godfather was Sir Georg Christoph von Reitzenstein from Posseck, lord of the manor and captain and valet of the prince Sachcen Zeitz

He emigrated, 1752. Point of origin: Rotterdam. Christoph immigrated, 14 Oct 1752. Destination: Philadelphia. Arrived on the ship Neptune. Christoph was trained as a dyer and his guild apprenticeship papers filed in Kulmback show that he spent three years in dyer training.

By 1752 he resided in Steinau an der Strausse, a village 35 miles northeast of Frankfort on the Main River where he is a master dyer. This town was in the administrative area of Hesse call Hesse-Hanau.

In his letter of intention to emigrate to Nova Scotia in February, 1752, Johann listed his profession as dyer. His reason for emigrating was a lack of food after the dying materials becaume more expensive to obtain. His assets included half a house and vegetable garden valued at 400 gulden. He was Lutheran, his wife was Reformed.

He left Hess-Hanau and came to America on the ship "Neptune" which sailed from Rotterdam under the command of Captain John Mason. It is thought that his son, John, may have been born at sea during the voyage over. This prospect was not uncommon since the trip could take two months to complete. The ship qualified at the Court House in Phiadelphia on October 4, 1752.

The earliet spelling of the surname was Kiessling. Johann seems to be known most commonly as Christoph and used the surname spelling Kissling when he arrived in Philadelpia. When this family arrived in Philadelphia in 1752, they seemed to have disappeared from records. Christoph surfaces again in Augusta Co., VA, living near Ursulasburg (now called McGaheysville). His wife and a daughter, Eva Elizabeth, must have died. We find no trace of them again. Christoph married a second time, date unknown, in Augusta Co., VA, about 1754 - 1758, to Anna Christina Lingle, a neighbor girl, daughter of Jacob and Ursula (nee Banckhard) Lingle. They also lived on Lick Run.

Many German families moved from Berks County about this time and settled in NC and VA. The ones settling in the McGaheyville area established the Peaked Mountain Luthern church; one of the prominent pastors of that church was Rev. Herber (Harper) who many descendants came across the mountain into what is now WV.

The first official record of him being in VA is his purchasing some items on 8 February 1759 at the estate of John Wingord (Chalkley, Augusta Co., VA records Vol. III, pg 134) Next we have Christopher and wife Christina 10 Oct 1763 sponsors for a baptismal of a child for Martin Herrloss and wife Catherine Lingel in the Peaked Mountain Luthern Church. This established the fact the early Keslings were Lutherans.

In 1767-68 Christopher was processioned in Augusta Parish Vestry Book showing his name as Christopher Cisling. The purposes of this register was for military purposes and taxes.

Christopher Kislin died in the early part of 1774 probably as the result of an accident, as the records of Augusta County, VA show that an inquest was held over him. Augusta County Court Records, Order Book No. XIV, PG 304 states "Christopher Kisling's (deceased) estate committed to widow, Christina, March 15, 1774." His inventory indicated that he was a dyer by trade.

His wife remarried John Herdman. Christopher's will was written December 20, 1773 and received by the Court of Augusta County, Virginia on Mar 15, 1774.

Daughter of Henry Prill.

Henry moved to 1804 in Twin Twsp, Preble Co, OH. Farmed north of West Alexandria, Preble Co, OH. Buried West Alexandria Cemetery.

Christoph Sebastian Kiessling and Anna Gertrauda Kautz had the following children:

+ 29 viii. Dieterich "Teter or Peter" Kesling was born 11 Mar 1750.

30 ix. Eva Elizabetha Kisling was born in Steinau, Hesse-Hanau (Germany) 20 May 1751.

31 x. Johannes 'John' Kisling was born in Steinau, Hesse-Hanau (Germany) or at sea abt 1752. May have been born on board the ship Neptune on the voyage to Philadelphia. Johannes died 1820 in Pendleton, VA, at 68 years of age. He married Elizabeth Runkle in Augusta Co, VA, 1775. Elizabeth was born in Germany. Augusta Co., VA deed book 21 page 364; John and Elizabeth Kesling sold land 19 November 1776 to Martin Finder, part of 226 acres patented to Jacob Runkle 30 August 1763, west of the land where said Runkle lives. Jacob Runkle mentions daughter Elizabeth Cislin in his will probated in 1791; this land may have been deeded to her earlier as an inheritance, therefore this is how we tie the Kesling and Runkle families together. Next we have in September 1787 Rockingham Co. Vol. 000 page 364 (I may have made a mistake when printing that 000 ?) John Keisling and wife to Peter Runkle (likely Elizabeth's brother)

The following are abstracts of deeds indicating where they lived:

Vol.3 pg 53 Pendleton Co.,VA deeds 4 Sept. 1798, Samuel Redman and Peggy Margarte his wife to John Keisling of Pendleton, 150 pounds current of VA, 100 acres in Pendleton on the Bull pasture Mountain being part of a tract of land granted to David Bell dec'd containing 250 acres patented 16 March 1770 with lines of Robert McCrays and John Davisson.

Vol.3 pg 56 Pendleton Co 4 Sept 1798: John Keisling and Elizabeth his wife Pendleton to William Harris of Pendleton 19 pounds for 14 acres on the top of the mountain between Cowpasture and Bullpasture rivers.

Vol.3 pg 59 Pendleton Co., Va 4 Sept 1798: Samuel Redman and Margaret his wife and John Keisling and Elizabeth his wife of the one part and Samuel Wilson of the other part both of the Co. of Pendleton and state of VA 150 pounds, for 232 acres part of patent to John Chesnut and by him conveyed to John Keisling on Bullpasture mountain. These deeds may have been granted some time previously, as much as 10 to 15 years and all recorded the same day. There was another land transaction made by John Keiling 1 September 1801 in Pend. Co., Vol.3 page 266 listed in Deed index. The 1810 Federal Census of Pendleton Co., VA shows John Kesling having possible children in the family ranging ages 10 to 26. However we cannot find him anywhere in the 1820 census.

They made a land transfer on 23 December 1819 in Pendleton Co., Vol 7 page 362: John Keisling and Eliza his wife of Pendleton to Robert S. Hooks of Rockingham Co., $1000 for 100 acres in Pendleton on the Bull pasture mountain, being part of a tract of land granted to David Bell dec'd containing 250 acres 16 March 1770 joining lines of Robert McCray and John Davisson.

A further statement which may or may not prove John Kesling being in Pendleton (In what is now Highland Co) as stated in History of Highland Co by Morton, page 110; William Jordon was the overseer in 1790 had the road from the head of the Cowpasture southward to the old Pendleton line. His assistants were Francis Hayworth, Thomas Douglas and three sons, Thomas Devericks and one son, Henry Jones, Edward Morton, William Harris, John Keezle and son and John Hatton.

Since John and Elizabeth sold land on 23 December 1819 in Pendleton Co. as stated in Vol. 7 page 362 and the census was taken in the summer of 1820 it is possible both John and Elizabeth passed away in the early part of 1820 or they were listed in another household where a son-in-law is head of the household, this easily missed.

Seventh Generation

29. Dieterich "Teter or Peter"7 Kesling (Christoph Sebastian6 Kiessling, Abraham Andreas5, Johann Heinrich4, Peter3, Jobst2, Christoph1) was born in Steinau, Hesse-Hanau (Germany) 11 Mar 1750. Dieterich died 23 Dec 1841 in Clear Creek Twp, Warren, OH, at 91 years of age. His body was interred 24 Dec 1841 in Springboro, Warren Co, OH, Salem. Buried at Salem Reformed Church.

The Salem Cemetery is east of Springboro on Lower Springboro Rd, east of 5-Points Rd. It is on a narrow lane south of the road. The lane goes back between the trees so is easy to miss. Just past that lane to the east on the south side of the road is the old schoolhouse No. 5. It is a now a home. Just beyond the school is a farm back a lane. There's a bank barn on the right, and a house with dormer windows upstairs on the left. These are Teter Kesling's house and barn. They have been remodeled as the original house partly burned, and didn't have an upstairs, but the shape is just the same. There are still logs inside some of the walls. The land in front is a horse pasture. Henry's brother John lived on 5-Points Road where Kesling Park is now. When you come to the cross over, heading east, turn left and Kesling Park is just up on the knoll. The unoccupied old house about across the road was the home of Julian Kesling Hayner. There are other Kesling homes in the region, but these are the easiest to find.

He married twice. He married Elizabeth Link in Rockingham, VA, abt 1781. Elizabeth was born 1760. Elizabeth was the daughter of Daniel Link and Catherine ??. She married David Fudge. She was the widow of David Fudge at time of marriage to Teter Kisling.

Elizabeth died 20 Apr 1829 in Clear Creek Twp, Warren, OH, at 68 years of age. Her body was interred in Warren Co, OH, Salem. He married Ana Maria Shaeffer in Montgomery Co, OH, 16 Mar 1830. She married Philip Gunckel in Montgomery Co, OH, 10 Dec 1842.

He was baptized in Steinau Lutheran, 1750. Deitrich and his sister Eva Elizabetha were both baptiszed in the Reformed church in Steinau by Pastor Grimm, the grandfather of the famous Grimm brothers, the fairy tale writers.

Dieterich applied for a military pension in Warren Co, OH, 03 Oct 1832. Teter or Peter served in the Revolutionary War as a private in the Virginia Militia. While residing in Rockingham County, Virginia, Ditrich Kisling enlisted, date not given, served three months as a private in Captain William Knowl's Virginia Company and went on an expedition to the western frontier of Virginia against the Indians. He enlisted in the fall of 1780, served three months as a private in Captain John Rush's Company, Colonel Smith's Virginia Regiment and marched to Richmond. He enlisted again in the summer of 1781, served in Captain Reagan's Virginia Company, marched to Williamsburg and Yorktown and remained at the latter place until three or four days before the surrender of Cornwallis, when he was discharged, having served three months. He was also out on short tours, details not given.

Peter and his family moved to Kentucky in 1794. Peter and Elizabeth were living in Bourbon County, Kentucky at the time of her father's death based on papers from the settlement of his estate. Peter quite possibly has received land in Kentucky for his service to Virginia during the War as many other soldiers had. Many of the War records on Virginia Bounty Lands were stored at Williamsburg, Virginia and were destroyed by fire during the Civil War.

Peter and Elizabeth raised the two sons of David Fudge as well as raising ten children of their own.

Teeter Kiesling is found in both the 1787 Census of Virginia and 1787 Rockingham County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List. He is not found in the 1790 Federal Census for Virginia. Peter moved from Kentucky to what was then the Northwest Territory in 1797. They had left behind the two children of David Fudge, probably in the care of other relatives. Peter and his family are truly some of the very first pioneers of what is now Warren County, Ohio. Peter's first land patents were issued December 14, 1801 (R5,T2,S15-SE 1/4) and (R4,T3,S6) in what was then Hamilton County of the Northwest Territory. Ohio did not receive statehood until 1803.

Their first home was in Turtle Creek Township. Their son George attended the first school on Turtle Creek in the spring of 1798. They sold their property in 1813 to George and Elizabeth Fox and moved to "The Clear Creek Settlement". This was an area settled by many people from Rockingham County, Virginia. It is now Clear Creek Township, Warren County, Ohio. He purchase additional property in Warren County on November 7, 1805 and December 12, 1810 (R2,T8,S10).

Elizabeth KISLING died August 20, 1829 in Clear Creek Township. She was buried in Salem Cemetery. Peter remarried Ana Maria Shaefer in 1830 in Montgomery County, Ohio.

Peter KESLING applied for a military pension October 3, 1832 while living in Clear Creek Township. He is listed in a Militia Pension List of men receiving pensions for service as Virginia militiamen. He was 77 years of age, living in Warren County, Ohio.

Peter died December 23, 1841 in Clear Creek Township and was buried next to his wife in Salem Cemetery. Their headstones are still standing, although many of the stones in the cemetery are now gone or have been vandalized. Peter's estate was recorded in 1842 in Chauncery Court records (Warren County Will Book 8, page 769, box 5).
