2 i. Robert, Count of Corbeill2 was born on (birth date unknown). 3 ii. Adele, Prince of Normandy was born on (birth date unknown). + 4 iii. Guillaume I, William Longsword was born abt 893.Revised 12 Sep 2000
First Generation1. Robert (Rollo)1 Rognavaldsson, son of Rognvald the Wolf and Ragnhilda, was born in Maer, Nord-Trondelag, Norway abt 854-870. Robert died abt 927-932 in Notre Dame, Rouen, France. His body was interred in Notre Dame, Rouen, France.
He married twice. He married Poppa de Valois Duchess of Normany 886-891. He married Gisele, Duchess of Normandy France, 912. Rollo Ganger-Hrolf was conqueror of Normandy from whom are descended the Earls of Rouen, the Dukes of Normandy, and the Kings of England. Rollo was one of the most famous Vikings of his age and had learned well the battle tactics taught by his father Rognvald The Wolf.
On account of Rollo's great stature, he was known as "Ganger Hrolf" or "Walking Rollo". His Danish name was Hrolfr or Rolf in various spellings.
The Normans were Scandinavian invaders who settled Normandy from about 820. Raids by these Northmen or Norsemen up the Seine River began before the middle of the ninth century. They gradually established themselves at the mouths of the Seine and other rivers in northern France. In 911 the Frankish king, Charles the Simple, granted Rollo and his band of Northmen the district about Rouen, to which additional territory was added a few years later. Scandinavian immigrants arrived in great numbers to colonize the land, and the area became known as Normandy. In 912 Rollo, became the first Duke of Normandy.
As was the custom at the time, men could have more than one wife. Rollo had a pagan wife, Poppa and two children. Even so, a priest married him to the daughter of the French King Charles The Simple (Gisela de France) in a christian ceremony. There were no children of this marriage. In 918, Rollo married his wife Poppa in a Christian ceremony and thus legitimised his son Guilliamme and daughter Gerloc (baptised Adele). Poppa and Rollo had to send Guilliame to be raised by clerics to guarantee his right to succede his father as Duke of Normandy. Guilliame was later known as William Longsword.
Rollo is buried in a tomb in Notre Dame Cathedral at Rouen, France.
Robert (Rollo) Rognavaldsson and Poppa de Valois Duchess of Normany had the following children:
Second Generation
4. Guillaume I, William Longsword2 (Robert (Rollo)1 Rognavaldsson) was born in Normandy, France abt 893. Guillaume died 17 Dec 942 or 943 France, at 49 years of age.
He married twice. He married Ledgarde, Duchess of Normandy. He married Sprota de Bretagne in Normandy, France, abt 932.
Guillaume I, William Longsword and Sprota de Bretagne had the following child:
+ 5 i. Richard I the Fearless,3 was born 28 Aug 933.
Third Generation
5. Richard I the Fearless,3 (Guillaume I, William Longsword2, Robert (Rollo)1 Rognavaldsson) was born in Normandy, France 28 Aug 933. Richard died 20 nov 996 in Fecamp, Seine-Inferieure, France, at 63 years of age. His body was interred in Fecamp, Seine-Inferieure, France.
He married twice. He married Esme or Emma ?? France, 956. He married Gonnor de Crepon France, aft 962. He was surnamed "The Fearless" and reigned for fifty three years - beginning at age ten. He built a castle in Rouen which stood on the site of the "halles" or markets. It was called Vielle Tour and was the seat of the Norman sovereigns. It was demolished in 1204. He established the first mint at Rouen. In his day the majority of citizens were worshippers of Odin. He married Esme, a Christian noblewoman related closely to the throne of France.
They had no children. After her death, he married his Danish wife Gunnor in the rites of the church. Their daughter Emma de Normandii married Aethelred, King of England in 1002. By this first marriage she became the mother of Edward the Confessor. By her second marriage she became the mother of King Hardicanute. His father was William Longsword, son of Rollo, grandson of Rognvald the Wolf.
Stories of the ancestors of this time come from the *chartularies of Kenilworth and of Stone Priory in Staffordshire. They are the source of the Norse and Northumbiran stories. It was from the old Northumbrian families that the story of Robin Hood first came.
"I ken rymes of Robyn Hood and Randolf, Earl of Chester."
This is the oldest known mention of Robin Hood. The nobleman mentioned was a special friend of Fulke Fitz Warine.
Another instance, John de Fordun, who died in 1386 describes Robin Hood as a very religious sort of person, who frequented Harnisdale. Then Andrew Wyntoun, about 1420 says:
"Lytell Ihon and Robyne Hude Wathmen (1) ware commendyd gude; In Yngilwode and Barnysdale Thai oysed (2) all this tyme thare trawale (3). (1. Read sportsmen; 2.used, frequented; 3. Travel, work, labor)"
Robin Hood was no myth, but there was a succession of them. The first being one Dan Waryn of Northumberland. There was a Robin Hood of Redesdale in Northumberland. These first outlaws were local nobles hounded from their homes by the men of the Conqueror and forced to live in the forest until a place could be found for them in the feudal society as an ally or vassal of another noble.
Richard I the Fearless, Duke of Normandy and Gonnor de Crepon had the following children:
6 i. Emma4 de Normandii was born before 1002, the first event for which there is a recorded date. She married Aethelred, King of England 1002.
7 ii. Robert de Normandy was born on (birth date unknown).
+ 8 iii. Mauger de Normandii was born abt 967.
9 iv. Richard II, Duke of Normandy was born on (birth date unknown).
Fourth Generation
8. Mauger4 de Normandii (Richard I the Fearless,3 , Guillaume I, William Longsword2, Robert (Rollo)1 Rognavaldsson) was born in Normandy, France abt 967. Mauger died in Normandy, France.
He married Germaine de Corbeil. About 1007 Mauger, great grandson of Rollo became Count of Corbeil and Count of Montaigne. Mauger married Germaine de Corbeil . He was the second son of Richard I surnamed the Fearless, Duke of Normandy. Germaine de Corbeil brought Corbeil as her dowery.
Mauger de Normandii and Germaine de Corbeil had the following child:
+ 10 i. Guillaume surnamed5 Werlac was born on (birth date unknown).
Fifth Generation
10. Guillaume surnamed5 Werlac (Mauger4 de Normandii, Richard I the Fearless,3 , Guillaume I, William Longsword2, Robert (Rollo)1 Rognavaldsson) was born on (birth date unknown).
Count of Corbeil and Mortaigne and Count of Banastre in Calabria in Italy.
Mention was made of him the first time in about 1040 in a charter of an abbey in Corbeil. (Ibid. P.121)
Shortly after 1050 Werlac was dispossessed by Duke William of his lands and exiled to Italy. The Catholic Church could have backed him as a more legitimate heir to the title. And Duke William was not yet "The Conqueror".
It appears that a false charge of sedition was brought against him by Robert de Avranches and his brother Robert the Bigod. The quote they falsely attributed to Werlac sounded like a plan to take over Normandy. Werlac was seventy years old at this time. The exile left him as a traveling knight with only a squire as his attendant. The conspirators did not get his wealth. Instead, that went to the Duke's brother.
Duke William invited the elderly Werlac to visit as his beloved cousin. He was accompanied by one squire for this short visit. William then banished him beyond the border of Normandy and cast him penniless into France. The same evening the Duke's brother took possession of Werlac's estate and all it contained. Without information of what had been arranged with the King of France, Werlac and his man continued on horseback through France and crossed the Alps to Apulia to stay with Robert Guiscard where he was received with enthusiasm for his gifts of statesmanship, wisdom and experience.
Apulia was largely in the control of Norman families who had journeyed there as pilgrims and had seized the opportunity to set up their own republic with twelve Counts elected by popular suffrage. Amalfi was their capital.
Guiscard gave Werlac the manor of Banestere in Calabria. Some of his descendants still use the name Banistre to this day. His son returned to France and succeeded in a military career with the king.
Werlac became more and more homesick. With the permission of Duke William he went back to France and settled in Corbeil and repaired (in some measure) his fortunes.
Duke William allowed the aged man to return to die in the Church of St. Maur in Corbeil . He died May 27th 1067.
"While Guillaume or Werlac, after his return, was in Corbeil the inhabitants were greatly troubled by the plague caused by the intemperance of the season, which injured the crops and brought the famine. This followed so closely after the ravages of the pest of 1060 which had depopulated La Breipaque, the birthplace of St. Jean Baptist, that it added very much to the sufferings of the people. Werlac devoted so much of his time to visiting the sick and gave so freely of his private means to the poor and so feelingly extended his sympathy and encouragement in this time of great adversity that even to this day in Corbeil his name is spoken with veneration and respect. [Society Historie & Archeologique de Corbeil de Etamps et du Huipoix, bulletins 10 and 5] " (Ibid p.128)
Guillaume surnamed Werlac had the following child:
+ 11 i. Regnault6 de Corbeil was born before 1049 or 1052, the first event for which there is a recorded date.
Sixth Generation
11. Regnault6 de Corbeil (Guillaume surnamed5 Werlac, Mauger4 de Normandii, Richard I the Fearless,3 , Guillaume I, William Longsword2, Robert (Rollo)1 Rognavaldsson) was born before 1049 or 1052, the first event for which there is a recorded date.
He was a favorite of King Philip I of France. He used his seal on the act of dedication of a gift in 1067. He was buried in the church of the monks of Vincennes in a tomb of black marble which had been placed in the nave of the church of the convent.
Regnault de Corbeil had the following child:
+ 12 i. Gilbert7 de Corbeil was born 1049 or 1052.
Seventh Generation
12. Gilbert7 de Corbeil (Regnault6, Guillaume surnamed5 Werlac, Mauger4 de Normandii, Richard I the Fearless,3 , Guillaume I, William Longsword2, Robert (Rollo)1 Rognavaldsson) was born 1049 or 1052.
He married Isabella Lupus. Isabella was born 1061. Isabella was the daughter of Richard de Goz de Avranches and Emma de Conteville. She was a descendant of Rognvald The Wolf and his son Hrollauf, son of the slave woman. She was the daughter of Richard de Goz, de Avranches, and his wife Emma de Conteville, half-sister by the same mother (by her second husband Herlwin) of William Duke of Normandy, surnamed the Conqueror. Gilbert probably abducted her as was the custom. Family tradition tells that her parents disapproved. Gilbert was about four or five years old when his grandfather Werlac was banished from Normandy and his estates of Corbeil and Mortaigne confiscated. Since his mother was a member of the Bernician nobility, she had lands in Bernicia from her dowry. Gilbert grew up there. It is ironic that the father of his future wife was one of the conspirators who dispossessed Werlac and thus took the great wealth enjoyed by the family to that time away from their descendants.
Isabella and Gilbert met at the time of the migration to the vicinity of Stone Priory.
Their children were educated in Northumberland in "the best schools in Europe, those intended for Norsemen." (Ibid p. 152)d
Gilbert de Corbeil had the following child:
+ 13 i. Robert Fitz Gilbert8 de Corbeil was born on (birth date unknown).
Eighth Generation
13. Robert Fitz Gilbert8 de Corbeil (Gilbert7, Regnault6, Guillaume surnamed5 Werlac, Mauger4 de Normandii, Richard I the Fearless,3 , Guillaume I, William Longsword2, Robert (Rollo)1 Rognavaldsson) was born on (birth date unknown).
He was the first of our family to win the manor of Peshale. He married into one of the families who formed the colony of emigrants from Northumberland and who settled near Stone Priory in Staffordshire.
"At this time Staffordshire was almost an unbroken forest with only here and there clearings which had been made by the English prior to the Conquest. Among these clear and cultivated spots in the forest was that of Peshale which had been forfeited from its English owner and which was now included in the holdings of Robert de Toesni, de Stafford. The deed of confirmation discloses that his manor was purchased by Gilbert de Corbeil for his son Robert Fitz Gilbert de Corbeil. Thither the young man journeyed with his bride to begin life in a country as undeveloped as was the great forest of New York and Pennsylvania at the close of the Revolutionary War. It is known in English History as a wilderness, and the whole country teemed with wild life from the great wild ox of Brittany and the terrible forest wolf to the smallest varmint, and there was game in abundance of all kinds for food for the successful hunter. Instead of the Indians of the American forest, there was the Welsh-man, who although a white man of good ancestry, [sic] had been forced to become a lurking savage." (Pearsalls v. 1 p.177)
"It was a principle of the English law down to the reign of Charles II that a feoffment of land need not be in writing and that its transfer might be effected by the symbolical delivery of a piece of turf or twig or a stone and by many other ways and this was the method followed by Robert de Stafford in granting the manor of Peshale to Robert Fitz Gilbert de Corbeil." (Ibid. p.179) The confirmatory deed was dated 1068 in this record, but in other sources, was more probably in 1168. (Ibid p.181) He may not have come to Staffordshire until as late as 1100.
Robert Fitz Gilbert de Corbeil had the following child:
+ 14 i. Robert9 de Peshale was born on (birth date unknown).
Ninth Generation
14. Robert9 de Peshale (Robert Fitz Gilbert8 de Corbeil, Gilbert7, Regnault6, Guillaume surnamed5 Werlac, Mauger4 de Normandii, Richard I the Fearless,3 , Guillaume I, William Longsword2, Robert (Rollo)1 Rognavaldsson) was born on (birth date unknown).
He married Ormunda de Lumley de Stafford. Ormunda is the daughter of Osbert de Lumley de Stafford. Robert de Peshale was the first to use the name which came from his manor. He was married to Ormunda, daughter of Osbert de Lumley, (County Durham), de Stafford and de Swinnerton in Staffordshire. Ormunda de Lumley de Stafford was descended from and of the blood of all the Bernician Northumbrian kings (as was Poppa, Rognvald's wife and Rollo's mother).
Robert de Peshale had the following child:
+ 15 i. John de Lumley10 de Peshale was born on (birth date unknown).
Tenth Generation
15. John de Lumley10 de Peshale (Robert9, Robert Fitz Gilbert8 de Corbeil, Gilbert7, Regnault6, Guillaume surnamed5 Werlac, Mauger4 de Normandii, Richard I the Fearless,3 , Guillaume I, William Longsword2, Robert (Rollo)1 Rognavaldsson) was born on (birth date unknown).
He was married to a daughter of Robert Fitz Alan of Swynnerton. The deed naming him as the heir of his father Robert is in the British Museum (Collectanea Genealogica ex Cartiis Antiques, collected by R. Holmes, Harleian Mss. No. 1985) The purpose of this bequest was to give him standing as the husband of the heiress to Swynnerton and a member of the Fitz Alan family. The manor of Lumley passed to the husbands of later descendants. The family was still among those considered "Scots" as they had come south from Northumbria. These families were not dispossessed by the advent of their cousin William the Conqueror.
"On his deathbed the Conqueror confessed that he never trusted any of the family of those whom he had injured. So perhaps it was a lucky incident in our family history that our ancestor was located way out of the Conqueror's sight in the midst of the great woods of Staffordshire and near the Welsh border. Out of sight and out of mind, perhaps he could survive until the great destroyer had passed away. The records of this and succeeding generations were kept in large locked boxes called chartularies. Other than court records of their wills and court cases, few records exist. It was considered wise to avoid the attention of the monarch.
John de Lumley de Peshale had the following child:
+ 16 i. William11 de Peshale was born on (birth date unknown).
Eleventh Generation
16. William11 de Peshale (John de Lumley10, Robert9, Robert Fitz Gilbert8 de Corbeil, Gilbert7, Regnault6, Guillaume surnamed5 Werlac, Mauger4 de Normandii, Richard I the Fearless,3 , Guillaume I, William Longsword2, Robert (Rollo)1 Rognavaldsson) was born on (birth date unknown).
He was a tenant of the Barons of Wemme in Shropshire and may have been a military consultant to him.
William de Peshale had the following child:
+ 17 i. Walter12 de Peshale was born on (birth date unknown).

Walter de Peshale resided in Shropshire and was very closely associated with the family of Fitz Alan (ancestors of the Stuarts). He is mentioned in the will of Fitz Alan, Lord of Arundel as Master Walter de Peshale, indicating at that time that he was a doctor of medicine. He married the daughter of William Fitz Alan III, Lord of Clun.
Walter de Peshale had the following child:
+ 18 i. Adam13 de Peshale Sr was born on (birth date unknown).

Adam died 1348.
Sampson Eardswicke says this Adam married one of the daughters and heirs of John Caverswall and had the manor of Bishop's Offley as a result. At that time, his father Adam gave him Horsley to better his standing for this advantageous marriage. Another source says it was that marriage to Joan de Eyerton, heiress to the de Cresswalls which was the advantageous match. This marked the return of the family to Staffordshire. He was Sherriff of Staffordshire and Shropshire in 1341.
He had a manor and flocks of sheep at Himley near Eccleshall. He was killed by enemies Jan. 8, 1346. They justified the murder by claiming falsely that he had been outlawed and that his property was forfeit to the King. The widow had to fight the King's claim in court. This battle continued for many years. Adam de Peshale Died @1348
"The same chain of circumstances that made his brother a prisoner in the Tower of London, made Adam de Peshale a party to the lawlessness and rioting warfare in Staffordshire. In the days when men who disagreed as to political policies each maintained his personal views by the power of his sword, we see the Barons under Montfort waging actual and successful against their king and afterwards acting as though they had all the time been faithful law-abiding subjects. This view had extended to the courts of justice...."
"That our ancestor survived until he had sons and that we are in existence is simply because he and his sons were warriors of unusual prowess: brave, true and efficient." (Pearsalls v. 1 pp.511-512)

He was among Richmond 's (Henry VII) bodyguard when Richard III advanced on them seeking to engage his adversary in single combat. He married Isabel Rolleston. Isabel was born in Rolleston, Stafford, England 1501. During the reign of Henry VIII it was wise for those not associated with the Church of England to avoid having to do with the courts. Consequently, little record exists of this generation. Richard Pershall (Peshall) was recorded as living at Swinnerton in the Muster Roll of 1539.
