Odysseus![]() by Elmer Carrera Odysseus was an ancient Greek who was going home to Ithaca after coming from the Trojan war. For nine days Odysseus' ships were driven by a storm, but on the tenth day they reached the land of the Lotus Eaters in Africa where some of the companions of Odysseus ate fruit of the lotus. They also wished to live there forever. They sailed north and after a while of sailing they reached the island of Cyclops. There they were captured by the one-eyed giant Polyphemus. Odysseus blinded the giant and escaped to the island of Aelous, ruler of the winds, who gave a favorable breeze and bound the remaining unfavorable winds in a bag. Odysseus' companions, in search for gold, opened the bag. Immediately the ships were swept back to the island, from which Odysseus and his crew were now excluded. They got to the island of the Laestrygons, a race of cannibals who destroyed all ships but one where odysseus escaped. Odysseus kept on many adventures, but after everything happened Odysseus reconciliated with Penelope. He also returned to Ithaca and he was safe. Source Book: Funk and Wagnalls New Encyclopedia |
