Pygmalion

Pygmalion saw so much to blame in women that he chose to live unmaried. He was a sculptor, and he had made with his wonderful skill a statue of ivory that no woman looked as beautiful as it. Pygmalion at last fell in love with his creation. He put clothing on its limbs, jewels on its fingers, and a necklace of pearls upon its breast.

The festival of Venus was at hand, being celebrated with pomp at Cyprus. Sacrifices were offered too. When Pygmalion came, he stood before the altar and started praying timidly for his ivory to make it real. Venus, who heard him, decided to make his wish happen.

When Pygmalion returned home he kissed the ivory statue, but her lips were warm. She felt soft to his touch and yielded to his fingers. Venus blessed the couple she had formed and because of it Phaos was born.
