Jenna
A Grieving Little Kitty
![]()
When I met Steve he had these two lovely cats named Jenna and Jamie. And I had a adorable dog named Spikey. Well Steve and I got together and married. Fortunately all the animals got a long great. Jenna and Jamie were such good kitty friends. Although Jamie was a independent cat the two of them were usually all snuggled together somewhere snoozing. Jamie was much older than Jenna and wasn't very playful. But they still had they bouts of playtime running through the house. Jenna usually played with Spikey though. Or was it more like Spikey was playing with Jenna. I remember how Jenna use to tear off running in hopes that Spikey would chase her. Sometimes she would stop to look back just to make sure he was indeed chasing her. And when she did see him after her, well you should of seen the look on her face! Those two had so much fun together.
When Spikey took ill it was all very sudden. I had to rush Spikey to the vets and that's where he remained till he passed away. So all Jenna knew was that he was gone. It wasn't until Spikey passed away that I had heard something, that a animal knows death. I did not show Jenna Spikey's body. But Jenna was indeed looking all around for him crying.
It was just not even a week and a half after Spikey passed away that Jamie then showed her first signs of being ill. After having Jamie tested it turned out she had a rare form of skin cancer. Before we knew it the day came when Jamie passed away. At least with Jamie, Jenna saw how ill she was and sensed it so I believe she accepted Jamies' death. Jenna did indeed see Jamie's body for Jamie passed away in my arms at home.
Loosing two of Jenna's friends so quickly was just too much for her. Jenna was walking around the house crying out everywhere. And I mean loud cries of pain and sorrow. She was looking for her friends. Jenna was all alone and grieving. This was very difficult to deal with as I myself was grieving so. Remember how I said Jenna never wanted outside, well suddenly she was always at the door wanting out. She'd go outside and stand and look around for a few minutes than want back in. She was looking for her friends. Steve and I tried to comfort Jenna as much as we could, but it wasn't enough for her. Jenna was in great pain. If you've never experienced a grieving animal before it is very difficult to deal with. For soothing words and a gentle hug just aren't comforting enough. Jenna's grief was continuing and time wasn't helping. So I called a vet to ask what I could do for Jenna if anything other than time. The vet said it was a 50-50 chance that if we got another animal that Jenna would come out of her grief. Well Steve and I just weren't ready for another animal after just loosing two. But we had to put our feelings aside and think of Jenna's needs.
Steve and I decided on getting a kitten. We felt Jenna might take to a kitten more than a adult cat. But then their was that concern that what if Jenna wouldn't like the kitten. It was a tough decision, but we had to chance it. So we went to a local shelter that had plenty of cats and kittens.
Well we brought the new kitten home. Naturally their were a few growls and hisses from Jenna. But within just a couple of days Jenna was taking to the new kitten that we named Peaches. Jenna was acting like a full blown Mother to the kitten. Jenna was now coming out of her grief.
