+ + + Welcome + + +
With reconciling love and grace, Trinity Lutheran Church welcomes all people into this community of Christ.  We celebrate the diversity of God’s creation and our unity as God’s children.  In our ministry of reconciliation, we strive to transcend all human boundaries.  People of any race, age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and ability are welcome.  Join with us as we seek to understand God’s love for us.  We invite you to struggle with us to be faithful messengers of that love in the world.

Page numbers are in the front section of the Lutheran Book of Worship (green book).  Hymns are referenced as LBW #, HS # (Hymnal Supplement 1991) or TFF # (This Far by Faith.)

Choir Anthem

First Reading    Genesis 32; 22-31

22-23Jacob got up in the middle of the night and took his wives, his eleven children, and everything he owned across to the other side of the Jabbok River for safety. 24Afterwards, Jacob went back and spent the rest of the night alone.

A man came and fought with Jacob until just before daybreak. 25When the man saw that he could not win, he struck Jacob on the hip and threw it out of joint. 26They kept on wrestling until the man said, "Let go of me! It's almost daylight."

"You can't go until you bless me," Jacob replied.
27Then the man asked, "What is your name?"
"Jacob," he answered.
28The man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob. You have wrestled with God and with men, and you have won. That's why your name will be Israel." 29Jacob said, "Now tell me your name."

"Don't you know who I am?" he asked. And he blessed Jacob.
30Jacob said, "I have seen God face to face, and I am still alive." So he named the place Peniel. 31The sun was coming up as Jacob was leaving Peniel. He was limping because he had been struck on the hip,

Psalm    121

I lift up my eyes to the (hills)—
from (where) will my help come?

My help comes from the (Lord,)
who made (heav-) en and earth.

He who keeps Israel will neither (slum-) ber nor sleep.

The Lord is your (keeper;)
the Lord is your (shade) at your right hand.

The sun shall not strike you by day, … nor the moon by (night.)
The Lord will keep you from all evil; … (he) will keep your life.

The Lord will keep your going out and your coming (in)
from this time (on) and forevermore.

Second Reading    2 Timothy 3: 14- 4:5

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.  All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:  preach the word, be urgent in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, and exhort, be unfailing in patience and in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own likings, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander into myths. As for you, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

* Holy Gospel    Luke 18: 1-8

Gospel Verse (sung)    p.63
C    Alleluia.  Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.  Alleluia.  Alleluia
P    The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 18th chapter.
C    Glory to you, O Lord.

1Jesus told his disciples a story about how they should keep on praying and never give up:

2In a town there was once a judge who didn't fear God or care about people. 3In that same town there was a widow who kept going to the judge and saying, "Make sure that I get fair treatment in court."
4For a while the judge refused to do anything. Finally, he said to himself, "Even though I don't fear God or care about people, 5I will help this widow because she keeps on bothering me. If I don't help her, she will wear me out."

6The Lord said:
Think about what that crooked judge said. 7Won't God protect his chosen ones who pray to him day and night? Won't he be concerned for them? 8He will surely hurry and help them. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find on this earth anyone with faith?

P    The Gospel of the Lord.
C    Praise to you, O Christ.

From our Parish Nurse: Hello Trinity Friends
The month of October is Mental Health and Illness Awareness Month.  I would like to recognize this month by addressing an illness that needs more understanding, Depression.  Depression is more than just a blue mood.  Everyone gets sad sometimes, a brief mood, disappointments, grief after losing a loved one.  Depression, though, is NOT just a case of the blue's.  It is a serious medical illness that needs treatment, just like diabetes, asthma, or heart disease.

There are several signs and symptoms that help a health care professional  determine if a person has Depression.  If at least 5 of the following symptoms are present for most of the day, nearly every day for more than 2 weeks, seek professional help.

1.  Feelings of sadness, depressed mood, and/or irritability
2.  Loss of interest or pleasure in activities, such as hobbies or spending time with family/friends
3.  Change in weight or appetite
4.  Change in sleep patterns-sleeping too much or too little
5.  Feelings or guilt, hopelessness or worthlessness
6.  Inability to concentrate, remember things or make decisions
7.  Constant tiredness or loss of energy
8.  Restlessness or decreased activity9.  Frequent thoughts of suicide or death (Seek professional help immediately 216-623-6888, suicide hotline for Cuyahoga county)

Depression isn't something to be ashamed of, nor is it a character flaw or a sign of a weak personality.  No one with depression can just "Snap out of it".  Please contact me if I can be of any further assistance to you.
 God's peace and joy                      Kathy
